Glorious Reef
by Dawn Addy

The Living Reef series explores the beauty and flow of a healthy reef environment. I wanted these pieces to represent the vibrance and flow of life as it continuously changes with the ebb and flow of the tides. Each of these pieces has a longer title, named after friends who have passed through my life and left too soon. But that is the beauty of the reef for me… it represents continued growth and wonder and it portrays the flow of life, as it is constantly changing and recreating itself.

Tide Pools
by Sharon Buck

I love the sea, and to me tide pools are little windows to the ocean’s secrets. You can watch sea urchins with their secretive lives, starfish crawling along, all sorts of tiny fish and the shells, oh, so many shells! I wanted to give just a glimpse of this secret world in this wall hanging.

For the Birds
by Jennifer Cenker

Mother nature paints her portrait at sunset. Outside is where my body and mind can soar – it roots my spirit. I cherish the quiet beauty found after climbing a rocky mountain top. My body needs the inner peace I feel when standing deep in a forest staring breathlessly up at the trees. So often we get lost in the crazy rush of life and forget we have such beauty all around us. I hope my photographs invoke a sense of wonder and stir your need to get lost out in the beauty of mother nature.

Go With the Flow
by Angel Colbourne

I’ve grown up in Florida and have always loved our beautiful natural surroundings. I draw inspiration from the ocean, palm trees, seashells, and especially marine life. Not only are turtles my favorite animal, I have extensively studied them physiologically and psychologically. Therefore, I’ve depicted this sea turtle hatchling floating in the ocean. When I create art, I feel a sense of tranquility and happiness. The goal of my art is to have the person looking at it feel the same way.

Turtles in the Vortex
by Angel Colbourne

When creating this mixed media piece, I stepped out of the mindset of a 26-year-old woman and unleashed my inner child to do as she pleased. I dreamed of dancing clouds textured with acrylic paint, gradient galaxies, magical moons and pink turtles. My goal with “Turtles in the Vortex” was to combine elements of the Space Coast and the ocean in a juicy, whimsical, and thought-provoking way.

Golden Eye
by Nancy Dillen

A Great Blue Heron waits patiently before making a move. Aware of his presence are a frog and alligator. In the distance, a fisherman waits his turn. Throughout the evolution of my work, I created magically realistic oil paintings and drawings flipping from reality and fantasy as the spirit hits. My work reflects my intrigue with color and space. Merging the real and unreal, the romantic and the dramatic, allows me to accept things as they are and to dream and play.

Throughout the evolution of my work, I have created magically realistic oil paintings and drawings based on reality and fantasy flipping from one to the other as the spirit hits. My style is realism with a painterly touch. I want the viewer to enjoy the art and discover the brush stokes once they come closer to explore the painting. Fragility
by Marlyn Foell

Inspired by a photo I took, these sea turtles show the fragility & necessity of protecting them. From the web: “Sea turtles, even at diminished population levels, play an important role in ocean ecosystems by maintaining healthy seagrass beds and coral reefs, providing key habitat for marine life, balancing marine food webs and facilitating nutrient cycling from water to land.” The “exploding pineapple” quilt design makes the turtles recede as if they’re disappearing, which they are.

Sometimes This Place Bugs Me
by Marlyn Foell

A whimsical look at Florida’s creepier residents! Ahhhhh, sunny, lush, tropical, wet and wonderful Florida—a bug’s dream habitat. Bugs seek food, water and a suitable climate. With at least 244 different bug species, we call it “pest control”, as at best, all we can do is hope to live in harmony with them. Includes all kinds of materials and techniques, layered and layered to depict the constantly circling, buzzy, busy, chaotic life of bugs.

Tranquility
by Marlyn Foell

Always desired, often difficult, and very necessary, tranquility is a state of peace and quiet, when once achieved eases anxiety and stress. The elusive seahorse echoes tranquility as he glides thru the sea. This quilt began as a crayon pulled from a brown bag for a group challenge. Lucky for me, it was a color I would have chosen. Looking at it, I cherish my scuba days and the tranquil peace that underwater silence gave me then and now. I hope the viewer can find the hidden textures throughout.

Takin' Out the Trash
by KC Grapes

I started this in early 2020 before the world went off the rails. Then, agitated over politics, COVID, and more I attacked my painting with jabs of red/yellow paint. It morphed into ugly. Months later I got a grip and fixed it. But I felt I wanted to make a statement about “thoughtlessness” with it. This painting is now about harm caused by introduced, non-native species like the Walking Catfish – an unwelcome “trash” fish. Thus, the title.

Playing on Coquina
by Rene Griffith

Growing up in this area, my 7 siblings and I spent our summers at Canova Beach where coquina rocks were abundant. Coquina is made up of shell and fossil debris. When the tides changed it would expose tiny sea creatures trapped in the pools of the rocks. We all still love the ocean and remember the great times playing on the ledges. Although this rendition is abstract in nature, the colors and forms allow the viewer to envision walking on the rocks and the beautiful world the ocean affords us.

Solitude
by Rene Griffith

My usual work can be categorized as contemporary mixed-media abstract art. In this particular painting, I used paint to build up texture but did not use elements of collage. Having grown up in Melbourne, I have experienced the many changes this area has gone through. This painting comes from my memory of a place on the river where I have often gone to seek peace and solitude. The viewer can use their own imagination to reminisce about the memories the Indian River holds for them.

The Inlet
by Rene Griffith

Sebastian Inlet plays an important role in the ecological health of the Indian River Lagoon while also providing a playground for activities such as swimming, fishing, surfing, boating, and shelling. As an abstract painter, my intention was to depict the feeling of the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River and the currents they create along with the bridge, rocks, and waves. The viewers are invited to imagine themselves on a boat or in the water on a hot summer day!

Lionfish are a non-native species that can dramatically affect native ecosystems and local fishing economies. They are now established along the southeast coast of the U.S., the Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico, most likely from human introduction. Since Lionfish are not native they have few predators, reproduce rapidly, and are a plague as they feed on small crustaceans and fish including the young of important commercial fish species such as snapper and grouper.

Big Blue
by Iris Peters

I live in Vero Beach transitioning from Baltimore six years ago. My husband and I lived on a boat for five years and loved it. I started painting all the beautiful Florida wildlife I saw, much from the cockpit of my boat. I joined art clubs and participated in many of the shows, including Art in the Park, Under the Oaks, and the Space Coast and Melbourne Art Festivals. Much of my work is referenced and enhanced thru my own photos.

Athena
by Phyllis Petrillo

I recently read the “The Soul of an Octopus” by Sy Montgomery and became fascinated by these magnificent creatures. I drew Athena based on various pictures from the internet, books, magazines, and TV.  I created Athena as an art quilt and wanted to emphasize her fluidity and her dexterous, grasping suckers.  I appliquéd her body and drew her eye and suckers. I stitched her on the wave-like watery fabric with invisible thread.

I Sea You
by Phyllis Petrillo

A group of six quilters who meet once a month started a Round Robin with a turtle theme. The owner completed the first block and each member of completed two sides of the border. Then the quilt was returned to the owner for finishing. This turtle was hand drawn, painted and appliqued. The background was fussy-cut, thread painted and embellished with machine embroidered shells. I added the pink octopus in the corner for the ‘fun factor’ of this quilt.

Please Save Us
by Phyllis Petrillo

I have been art quilting for 5 years. After pursuing several creative endeavors, I discovered my passion, Art Quilting. Each piece I’ve created has personal meaning to me and has a story to tell. If necessary, I’m always willing to start over and have found this to be the greatest lesson of all, learning to be gentle and patient with myself and to never settle for results that are less than I’d hoped for.

Copper Mangrove Sculpture
by Kenny Reaume

This is an anatomically correct mangrove, made with copper and love.  Mangroves provide a habitat for juvenile fish and support the banks of the lagoon.  I fully believe in helping causes, like this Aquarium ArtWalk, that bring attention to improving our community and the beautiful Indian River Lagoon.

Tree of Life
by Kenny Reaume

This Mangrove was inspired by my mother’s battle with brain cancer. Specifically, a Glioblastoma – a primary brain tumor that science has not found a cure for yet. I passed out leaves to everyone who knows her and to others who can relate to the struggle of this terrible disease, and I asked them to decorate them. I wanted to show her the love she instilled in me, her family and friends.  That love resulted in this sculpture.

Leafy Seahorse
by Lisa Rose

While working with pastels, I became inspired by the beauty, serenity and complexity of nature – landscapes, seascapes, skyscapes, and animals. My pieces depict these bucolic scenes with a delicate blend of representation and a bit of abstraction. Dramatic color is provided by the handmade pastels of rich pure pigments, which allow vibrations of color and visual mixing not available in any other medium.

"See" Cows
by Kristin Russell

My subject matter demonstrates my love for nature as it often focuses on endangered animals. I use scraps of leftover PVC films (vinyl) that I recycle into the art. I transform the vinyl into my canvas, and sometimes use it as my paint. I am interested in combining organic, flowing textures with industrial, solid surfaces, and then discovering how those contrasting elements work together in my composition.

The Red Mangrove is a true “Keystone” species of the Indian River Lagoon. Propagules drop from branches and sprout new plants that provide habitat for many species and protection from storm surge. Oysters, barnacles, and sponges grow on the roots, filtering and cleaning the water. Juvenile fish, such as Mangrove and Schoolmaster Snapper, Sheepshead and Tarpon live around roots, feeding on Anchovies. Fish-eating Snowy Egrets perch on branches looking for prey. A whole ecosystem around a tree!

Canaveral Shells
by Lisa Stevens

I have been a bead artist for about 20 years. I have transitioned from making jewelry to wall art. I enjoy incorporating sea life into my work. One of my first jobs was working in an oceanarium and I soon became a thalassophile.
The shells incorporated In “Canaveral Shells” are pink scallops, which I found on the beach where I live.

Mr. Tentacles
by Bayze Vojnik

Mr. Tentacles is an octopus sketch that I created for my mom. My mom thinks that they are cool so I drew her one. We decided to submit it because I worked really hard on it. I would be honored to have my artwork chosen. I spend many hours drawing. My mom and I always draw together and we love all things tropical and aquatic.

Sea Fans & A Fish
by Sharon Way-Howard

I am an artist. It is my life. It’s how I see everything. Drawing and painting is not something I do, but rather, it is what makes me, me. My art is not an escape. It is my home. Where I belong. To create this painting, I pressed damp paper into color puddles on my palette to form sea fans, then used colored pencils to define lines, and gouache and watercolor to complete the fish.

This was painted from study photos I took at Riverside Park. It was the first time I ever saw a manatee actually breeching like a whale! Never saw this behavior before and just had to paint it!

I live on the edge of the Indian River Lagoon. Its sheer expanse, immersive wildlife, and timeless serenity have a centering effect on me. My artistic work – a multilayered, textural combination of acrylics, inks, and collage – offer glimpses of this unique estuarial paradise and the emotion it imparts onto those fortunate enough to grace its shores. This mixed-media work depicts peace and solitude on the Indian River. Texture and depth are created by layers of mark making, dripping and glazing.

Seahorse I
by Linda Williams

I paint & make art as “Linda Z Artist” & consider myself a contemporary nature artist. My journey through life has taught me to appreciate the sea and its inhabitants. Seaside Garden Studio & Gallery in Cocoa Village is where I create my visions of that appreciation. I love color & experimenting with paint & 3D art. I’m always looking for ways to recycle & I was given boxes of sea glass which inspired the seahorse art.

Good Morning Glory
by Toni Wooldridge

After moving here from South Carolina, I have become very interested in the wildlife in our area, especially the turtles, the Indian River Lagoon wildlife, beaches and landscapes. I plan to continue expanding my collection of local scenery. Beach morning glory is a trailing evergreen vine that typically blooms in summer and fall but may bloom year-round. It occurs naturally on coastal dunes where it is an important sand stabilizer.
